During this tour, numerous opportunities will arise for you to savour the authentic local cuisine, whether from the menus of included meals or from your own culinary exploration during your free time in the itinerary. Indulge in traditional dishes that showcase the rich flavours of the region, including Pho. This is perhaps the most famous Vietnamese dish, a flavourful soup made with broth, rice noodles, herbs, and meat (usually beef or chicken). The broth is typically simmered for hours with bones and spices, creating a deep, aromatic flavour. You could also try Banh Mi. This is a French-inspired Vietnamese sandwich, consisting of a crispy baguette filled with a variety of ingredients like pâté, cold cuts, pickled vegetables, cilantro, and chilies. Different regions and vendors might offer variations with grilled meats, eggs, or tofu.

Go Cong, especially Tan Thanh Beach, is famous for being one of the best birding locations for migratory shorebirds in Southern Vietnam. This area is vital for many shorebirds migrating along the East Asian Flyway, as the intertidal mudflats offer a habitat for thousands of these birds, including the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper. With this extra, you could encounter the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Nordmann’s Greenshank, Spot-billed Pelican, White-faced Plover, Far Eastern Curlew, Bar-tailed Godwit, Great Knot, Curlew Sandpiper, Red-necked Stint, and the Asian Dowitcher. Telescopes will be provided.

Itinerary
Day 1: Ho Chi Minh Arrival
Upon arriving at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2: Tam Nong National Park
In the morning, you’ll travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Cao Lanh, crossing the Bassac and Upper Mekong rivers. Near Cao Lanh, you’ll take a boat to Rung Tram Forest, a former Viet Cong base hidden close to a US military base. After lunch at Rung Tram, you’ll drive to Tam Nong National Park and Wetland Reserve. In the afternoon, a boat cruise will take you through the reserve’s channels and eucalyptus woods to observe over 200 species of water birds, including endangered ones like the Sarus Crane and Oriental Darter.

Day 3: Boat Ride through The Reserve
After breakfast, you’ll board a boat for a bird-watching excursion through a different route of the reserve, catching the morning activity of birds as they search for food. Between January and May, you might spot the rare red-headed cranes migrating between Tam Nong and Cambodia. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 4: Nam Cat Tien
Travel to Nam Cat Tien National Park and explore the “Reserve Core area.” After arriving, you’ll take a jeep to Crocodile Lake and hike 5 kilometers through the rainforest. On the lake, you’ll have the chance to see a variety of birds, including Germaine’s Peacock Pheasant, Siamese Fireback, and Green Peafowl, as well as other species like Doves and Kingfishers. In the evening, you’ll use binoculars and a spotlight to observe the “Night Life” at the lake, where crocodiles with red eyes hunt, and you might also spot deer foraging near the water.
The presence of these birds depends on the season. The best time to visit Nam Cat Tien National Park is the dry season from December to late May.

Day 5: Bird Watching Expert Tour

Day 8: My Son
Be picked up by a professional English-speaking bird expert and taken across the Thu Bon River to a wetland island. You’ll explore the island in search of various bird species. Afterward, you’ll have breakfast and enjoy local Vietnamese coffee. The birding continues at a lotus lake, rice fields, and shrimp ponds. You’ll have lunch at Tra Que Organic Vegetable Village before heading to My Son. Upon arrival, you’ll explore the temples and learn about their historical and cultural significance. As you walk around the valley, you may spot various bird species.

In the morning, you’ll drive to Cuc Phuong National Park, stopping en route at Van Long Nature Reserve. Here, you’ll take a sampan ride through flooded rice fields and dramatic limestone cliffs, where you might see Delacour’s Langur, a critically endangered primate, and various water birds. In the afternoon, you’ll continue to Cuc Phuong National Park to visit the Primate Rescue Centre and the Botanical Garden.

Day 11: Cuc Phuong National Park
Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam’s first national park, features limestone hills covered in primary rainforest. The best birding is in the park’s centre, where trails like the Loop Trail and Valley Trail offer excellent opportunities for spotting birds. You can enjoy one or two full days exploring the park to search for specialities such as the Pied Falconet, Bar-bellied Pitta, Blue-rumped Pitta, and White-tailed Flycatcher.
You might opt for a ‘night spotting mini safari’ in the evening, weather permitting. This excursion into the primary forest offers a chance to observe nocturnal animals such as the Black Giant Squirrel, Indian Flying Squirrel, Samba Deer, Slow Loris, and various small carnivores.

Day 12: Tam Dao

Day 13: Transfer back to Hanoi
In the hills above Tam Dao, trails like the Water Tank Trail and Radio Transmitter Trail are particularly productive for birdwatching.
