9TH FEBRUARY (ARRIVAL ON FRIDAY) – CELEBRATE SONAM LHOSAR IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 02)

On Sonam Lhosar, the New Year Day of the indigenous Tamang community, people offer prayers at monasteries, seek blessings from the elders, don traditional colourful attire, and enjoy cultural dance performances.

7th MARCH (ARRIVAL ON THURSDAY) – CELEBRATE SHIVARATRI IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 02)

Shivaratri is a special day for Hindus to pay homage to Lord Shiva, one of the main deities. People practice fasting, prayer, chanting, and puja to express their devotion. Many also visit temples to express their love and devotion to Lord Shiva.

Nepal celebrates Nepali New Year, which is a national holiday, on 13th April this year. This marks the beginning of Bikram Sambat, the official calendar of the country.

24TH APRIL (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE RATO MACHHINDRANATH IN PATAN (ON DAY 01)

The Rato Machindrantah Jatra is an age-old chariot festival celebrated in Patan, honouring the Buddhist deity Karunamaya Avalokiteshwor, the God of compassion. People from the local community take part in the chariot pulling and enjoy a feast with their family and friends.

17TH JUNE (ARRIVAL ON MONDAY) – CELEBRATE ROPAIN/RICE PLANTATION DAY IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 13)

In Nepal, most people are farmers, and the planting of new rice crops is celebrated as a festival. During this time, people can be seen ploughing the fields, planting the seedlings, and having a good time playing in the mud.

28TH JULY (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE SRAWAN 15 KHEER KHANE DIN IN KIRTIPUR (ON DAY 03)

Kheer Khane Din is a day celebrated to honour the hard work of farmers, signifying the end of the rice planting season. On this day, people come together to share a special dish of rice pudding (Kheer) with family and friends. The literal translation of this day is ‘the day to eat rice pudding’.

18TH AUGUST (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE JANAI PURNIMA IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 02)

5TH SEPTEMBER (ARRIVAL ON THURSDAY)– CELEBRATE INDRA JATRA IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 13)

Indra Jatra is a week-long festival celebrated with masked dances of deities and demons, as well as displays of sacred images and tableaus in honour of the lord of rain, Indra, the king of heaven. 6TH OCTOBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE VIJAYA DASHAMI IN BANDIPUR (ON DAY 08)

Celebrate Vijaya Dashami, also known as Dashain, with the local population in Bandipur on 13th October. This festival is celebrated for 15 days with great enthusiasm and is observed by most people. During this time, Durga and her various forms are worshipped to protect us from any evil spirits.

20TH OCTOBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE LAXMI PUJA IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 03)

Tihar is a vibrant celebration that spans seven days. On this holiday, people pay homage to crows, cows, dogs, and the goddess Laxmi. On the third day, often referred to as Laxmi Puja, devotees offer their respects to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, and take part in lively Deusi-Bhailo songs and dances. Brothers and sisters also honour each other, and everyone worships themselves.

15TH DECEMBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE YOMARI PUNHI IN PATAN (ON DAY 01)

Day 1: Arrival Kathmandu, check-in, relax and orientation walk with guide

When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our airport representative will be there to greet you with your name displayed on a placard. Depending on traffic, it should take about 20 minutes to get to your hotel. Relax and enjoy the atmosphere until your Group Meeting later in the evening, when your tour leader will collect your insurance information and discuss the itinerary for the upcoming days. Then, take an orientation walk around Patan Durbar Square, home to a diverse array of temples constructed in various architectural styles from different time periods, such as Krishna Mandir, Bhimsen Mandir, Taleju Bell, and more. Patan Durbar Square encapsulates the pride of Newari culture and history.

Day 2: Sightseeing Kathmandu UNESCO World Heritage Sites – temples and stupas, and rickshaw ride to Thamel

Today is an exciting day spent exploring some of the major UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu. First, you will visit Pashupatinath, a holy Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, built in 400 AD and later renovated in the 6th century. Inside the temple is a statue of a four-faced six-foot lingam, a phallic symbol of Shiva, in the middle of a rimmed, disc-shaped structure. This symbolises the concept of Shakti, or divine feminine power. Then, you will explore Boudhanath, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world that was historically a resting point for Tibetan merchants. Afterwards, you will be visiting the Kathmandu Durbar Square, which has the palace and courtyard of the old kings of Nepal. There, you will get to see many temples and buildings, including the Kumari Chowk (the courtyard of the living goddess), the Aakash Bhairav Temple, the Temple of Lord Machhendranath, and the Itumbahal courtyard. To end the day, you will take a relaxing rickshaw ride to Thamel, passing through the narrow streets of Kathmandu and getting a glimpse of local life, local shops in Ason Market, small temples and stupas, shops selling trekking gear and souvenirs, and restaurants. You will be spending the night at the Hotel Traditional Stay or similar, with breakfast provided in the hotel.

Day 3: Travel to Kirtipur, sightsee and learn about Ranjana Lipi, and stay in Kirtipur Community Homestay

After the exploration, you will be staying in a Kirtipur Community Homestay, and meals such as breakfast in the hotel, lunch and dinner in the homestay will be included. A half hour drive from the city will take you to Kirtipur, an old Newari town full of history, culture, and authentic cuisine. Exploring Kirtipur can be an unforgettable experience that you’ll cherish. You can discover the captivating beauty of this town, wander through its charming old streets, visit various religious temples and stupas that adorn the surrounding landscape, and experience the local lifestyle and scenery. Day 4: Prithvi Highway to Pokhara, traditional villages and rice terraces, free time to explore

Leaving the hustle and bustle of city life can be slow, but the scenery along the Prithvi Highway to Pokhara is impressive. The first few hours of the drive are winding and downhill, following the Trishuli River. After crossing the Mugling Bridge, the route passes through the Marshyangdi Hydroelectric Powerhouse and villages with traditional Nepalese homes, set against steep rice terraces and the majestic mountains beyond. As you get closer to the Pokhara Valley, you will be welcomed by the stunning Annapurna Range and the Seti River. You should arrive in Pokhara in the afternoon, leaving the rest of the day free to explore. The whole journey should take around 6 hours.

Day 5: Travel to Hemjaphedi, hike to Hemjakot village, and Hemjakot Community Homestay

Today you will drive approximately 45 minutes from Pokhara to Hemjaphedi and then hike for about 1.5 hours to reach the beautiful village of Hemjakot, located at the foothills of Mt. Machhapuchhre (The Fishtail). Hemjakot Community Homestay is an ideal place for a stopover for those travelling to other popular destinations such as the Dhampus Valley, the Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp treks. It is a great way to experience the stunning mountain views and gain an insight into the local lifestyle before heading off on one of these longer excursions.

Day 6: Forest hike to Australian Camp via Dhampus

Leaving Hemja today, you will embark on a trail that leads to Dhampus. This trail is steep and paved with stones and is surrounded by lush forests. On a clear day, you will be able to admire the majestic Himalayan Mountains of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, and Manaslu range, as well as the tranquil Pokhara valley nestled in the embrace of rolling green hills. Your journey will culminate at Australian Camp, a picturesque village renowned for its stunning views, before driving back to Pokhara.

Day 8: Travel to Bandipur and Dumre Bazaar

Leaving the stunning Pokhara, you take a journey across the Seti River gorge and Madi River, passing through small villages and farms along the winding roads to Bandipur. This historically preserved town, situated atop a hill, has Newari houses that have retained their originality. As you continue your journey, you ascend through pristine forests and arrive at Dumre Bazaar. Bandipur, which has not changed much over time, awaits travellers with its unique offerings – a rich hill culture, mountain views, and hikes. Not to mention its many cultural attributes such as temples, shrines, sacred caves, and countless festivals. It is no wonder Bandipur has kept its traditional Newari architecture for all these years.

Day 9: Drive to Barauli, greeted by traditional cultural program, stay at Barauli Community Homestay

A four-hour drive brings you to Barauli, located near Chitwan National Park, home to hundreds of species of birds and many endangered animals. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a traditional cultural program featuring songs and dances by women wearing traditional Tharu attire. During your stay, you can sample the local cuisine and experience the local lifestyle. The Barauli Community Homestay was created to help the Tharu people preserve their culture and to give them the opportunity to interact with the rest of the world and benefit from tourism. The villagers will take care of you while you stay in one of the twelve cottages, each of which is made and named by the local housewives. All huts contain clean, ensuite bathrooms and a hot shower.

Day 10: Jeep Safari, experience local life with Barauli Community Homestay

At Barauli, located on the edge of Chitwan National Park, a Jeep Safari is one of the highlights of our homestay. We provide our own jeeps and excellent naturalists to ensure you don’t miss a thing. For an experience you won’t forget, cycle through the small Tharu villages and fish farms, finishing at the Narayani River as the sun sets like a golden ball. The Tharu people are proud of their culture, evident in the famous Tharu stick dance performed in front of the homestay. Guests are welcome to join in if they enjoy the dance, providing some recreation and relaxation from the day’s activities.

Day 11: Scenic drive to Bhaktapur, explore the city

As we depart from Barauli, we embark on a straight and wide highway, entering the East-West highway. During our journey, we will pass through green forests and farming fields. On a sunny day, we can take in the majestic view of the Seti Gandaki River, which flows along us from Jugedi. As we continue, the highway gradually becomes smaller and slower, leaving the river behind us from Galchi. We will then head to Nagdhunga and finally reach the bustling city of Kathmandu, making our way to Bhaktapur. Bhaktapur is one of the Newari cities and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its well-preserved palace courtyards, its unique culture, and its remarkable temples and artworks made of wood, metal, and stone from the medieval period.

Day 12: Explore Bhaktapur, try traditional wood crafting, return to Kathmandu

Visiting Bhaktapur is a unique experience. As you stroll through the traditional alleys of the pottery square, you will be immersed in the city’s rich Newari culture and architecture. You will also have the chance to try your hand at the art of traditional woodcraft in a workshop, where exquisite pieces of craftsmanship can be seen adorning the walls. After taking home your own souvenir, you can explore the narrow, historic alleys of Bhaktapur. As night falls, you will be driving along the highway, with concrete buildings on either side, to reach the capital city of Kathmandu. Though the journey may take longer depending on the traffic, it will be worth it as Kathmandu is an incredibly diverse city filled with centuries-old artistry and craftsmanship.

It is recommended to arrive at the airport 2.5 hours before your flight departs, as queues can be long and slow. Your booked airport transfer should be at your hotel before this, allowing around 30 minutes of travel time, depending on the time of day.
