The Tharu ethnic community celebrates Maghi as their New Year, a time which marks the end of winter and the start of spring, as well as the beginning of the harvest season. On this special occasion, people come together to worship, enjoy delicious food, and dance with their loved ones.
9TH FEBRUARY (ARRIVAL ON FRIDAY) – CELEBRATE SONAM LHOSAR IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 02)
On Sonam Lhosar, the New Year Day of the indigenous Tamang community, people offer prayers at monasteries, seek blessings from the elders, don traditional colourful attire, and enjoy cultural dance performances.
7th MARCH (ARRIVAL ON THURSDAY) – CELEBRATE SHIVARATRI IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 02)
Shivaratri is a special day for Hindus to pay homage to Lord Shiva, one of the main deities. People practice fasting, prayer, chanting, and puja to express their devotion. Many also visit temples to express their love and devotion to Lord Shiva.

Celebrate Holi this spring on 24th March at Bandipur and the next day at Barauli in a unique way! A festival of colours, Holi signifies the victory of good over evil. 2ND APRIL (ARRIVAL ON TUESDAY) – CELEBRATE NEPALI NEW YEAR IN BHAKTAPUR (ON DAY 12)
Nepal celebrates Nepali New Year, which is a national holiday, on 13th April this year. This marks the beginning of Bikram Sambat, the official calendar of the country.
24TH APRIL (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE RATO MACHHINDRANATH IN PATAN (ON DAY 01)
The Rato Machindrantah Jatra is an age-old chariot festival celebrated in Patan, honouring the Buddhist deity Karunamaya Avalokiteshwor, the God of compassion. People from the local community take part in the chariot pulling and enjoy a feast with their family and friends.
17TH JUNE (ARRIVAL ON MONDAY) – CELEBRATE ROPAIN/RICE PLANTATION DAY IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 13)
In Nepal, most people are farmers, and the planting of new rice crops is celebrated as a festival. During this time, people can be seen ploughing the fields, planting the seedlings, and having a good time playing in the mud.
28TH JULY (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE SRAWAN 15 KHEER KHANE DIN IN KIRTIPUR (ON DAY 03)
Kheer Khane Din is a day celebrated to honour the hard work of farmers, signifying the end of the rice planting season. On this day, people come together to share a special dish of rice pudding (Kheer) with family and friends. The literal translation of this day is ‘the day to eat rice pudding’.
18TH AUGUST (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE JANAI PURNIMA IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 02)
On the auspicious occasion of Janai Purnima, a Doro, a sacred thread, is tied on the wrist of individuals for protection. Family and friends come together to celebrate this day, partaking in a feast featuring the special soup called Kwati.
5TH SEPTEMBER (ARRIVAL ON THURSDAY)– CELEBRATE INDRA JATRA IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 13)
Indra Jatra is a week-long festival celebrated with masked dances of deities and demons, as well as displays of sacred images and tableaus in honour of the lord of rain, Indra, the king of heaven. The highlight of this festival is the chariot procession of the living goddess, Kumari. Thousands of people flock to Kathmandu Durbar Square to observe and take part in the festivities.
22ND SEPTEMBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE VIJAYA DASHAMI IN BHAKTAPUR (ON DAY 12)
Celebrate Vijaya Dashami or Dashain, a 15-day festival filled with great enthusiasm, by joining the locals in Bhaktapur on 13th October. During this time of the year, the goddess Durga and her various forms are worshipped to ward off evil spirits. Come and join in on the festivities!
6TH OCTOBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE VIJAYA DASHAMI IN BANDIPUR (ON DAY 08)
Celebrate Vijaya Dashami, also known as Dashain, with the local population in Bandipur on 13th October. This festival is celebrated for 15 days with great enthusiasm and is observed by most people. During this time, Durga and her various forms are worshipped to protect us from any evil spirits.
20TH OCTOBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE LAXMI PUJA IN KATHMANDU (ON DAY 03)
Tihar is a vibrant celebration that spans seven days. On this holiday, people pay homage to crows, cows, dogs, and the goddess Laxmi. On the third day, often referred to as Laxmi Puja, devotees offer their respects to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, and take part in lively Deusi-Bhailo songs and dances. Brothers and sisters also honour each other, and everyone worships themselves.
15TH DECEMBER (ARRIVAL ON SUNDAY) – CELEBRATE YOMARI PUNHI IN PATAN (ON DAY 01)
On Yomari Punhi, celebrated by the Newar community in Nepal, a traditional sweet delicacy named Yomari is prepared and offered to Lord Kumar, Ganesh, Kuber, and Annapurna, the goddess of crops and food. This marks the end of the harvest season.
