Day 1: Bhutan – Paro Sightseeing

During your flight, you will be met with spectacular aerial views of Mt Everest, Kanchenjunga, sacred Chomolhari, and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. Don’t forget to snap some pictures of the beautiful Paro Valley during your flight’s descent! You will also see the iconic Paro Dzong perched atop a hillside overlooking the Paro Chu (river) and Ta Dzong.  When you arrive at Paro International Airport, be greeted by a local representative.

After, head to the famous tourist destination of Paro and check into your pre-booked hotel. Spend some time relaxing before going off to explore the area. Visit the National Museum of Bhutan, located in the historic Ta Dzong compound, to learn about and appreciate the rich culture and traditions of Bhutan. Built in 1968, it houses a variety of artifacts in its interior. Then, trek up to Rinpung Dzong where Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first temporal and spiritual ruler of Bhutan, constructed it in 1646. It serves as the main monastic body of Paro, as well as the office of the Dzongda (district administrative head) and Thrimpon (judge of the Paro district). To reach the Dzong, go over the traditional covered bridge called the Nemi Zam (or Nya Mey Zam, the “Bridge with No Fish). Afterwards, enjoy a pleasant overnight stay in Paro.

Day 2: Embrace the Famous Tiger Nest Trek

This morning, enjoy a mouth-watering breakfast at your hotel, followed by a full day tour of one of the most exciting and famous tourist attractions in Bhutan – the Tiger Nest Monastery or Paro Taktsang Monastery in Paro. Our driver will drop you off at the parking lot, from which you will enjoy a hike of 4.5 km each way to reach the spectacular monastery. Located 3,120 meters above sea level on the cliffside of the upper Paro Valley, this beautiful temple complex was first built in 1692 by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye and is believed to be where Guru Padmasambhava meditated for four months in the 8th century. Guru Padmasambhava is thought to have introduced Buddhism to Bhutan from India, and the popular Tsechu festival is celebrated in the Paro Valley during March or April in his honour.

After your trekking tour, you will visit Kyichu Lhakhang, an ancient Buddhist temple located in Paro and built in the 7th century by the renowned Tibetan Emperor, Songsten Gampo. Finally, you will return to your Paro hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 3: Thimphu – Explore this Beautiful Destination

After enjoying a tasty breakfast at the hotel, you will proceed to the capital city of Bhutan, Thimphu. On the way, make sure to stop at Chojum, a beautiful spot where the Thimphu Chu and Paro Chu meet. When you arrive in Thimphu, check in to your hotel and you’ll have the rest of the day to explore the city. A must-see destination is Tashi Chhoe Dzong, otherwise known as the Fortress of the Glorious Region. Day 4: Thimphu – Sightseeing Tour

After a delicious breakfast start your Thimphu sightseeing tour by visiting The National Memorial Chorten, also known as Thimpu Chorten. This stupa was built in honour of the 3rd king of Bhutan, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, also known as the ‘Father of Modern Bhutan’. Your next sightseeing destination is Changangkha Lhakhang Monastery in Thimphu, an important religious structure in the city that dates to the 15th century. This sacred structure honours Avalokiteshvara, an embodiment of compassion, and offers stunning views of the Thimphu Valley. Day 5: Punakha – Embark on a Sightseeing Journey

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel, you will embark on a drive to the exciting destination of Punakha. This journey will take around two hours, with a stop at Dochula viewpoint, located at Dochu La pass (around 3,100 m high). From here, you can marvel at your magnificent first look into the Eastern Himalayan range. After, the road will begin to ease its way down into the lower Valley of Punakha.

Upon arriving in Punakha, check into your hotel and then proceed to explore Punakha by visiting Chimi Lhakhang. Situated atop a hillock in the centre of the town, the Chimi Lhakhang is a sacred site honouring Lama Drukpa Kuenley, better known as the Divine Madman. Famed among locals for the stories of how the Lama spread his message of Dharmics utilising humour, song, and outrageous behaviour, it is an iconic monument that should not be missed. Here you can also explore a temple said to be dedicated to fertility. Many Bhutanese locals believe that couples unable to conceive can be blessed with a child if they pray at the temple. To discover this, you will embark on a rural trail, through a paddy field, and across a tiny stream. The temple is just a short climb away.

You will also uncover Punakha Dzong, known as the ‘Palace of Great Happiness,’ which is located at the junction of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in between the Punakha and Wangdue valley. This beautiful ancient fortress is one of the most attractive in all of Bhutan and contains many precious relics from when kings reigned the kingdom from the valley. It is joined to the mainland by an arched wooden bridge. Visiting Punakha Dzong is truly a unique and unforgettable experience.

Finally, you will cross the suspension bridge over the river Mo to visit the hidden treasures of Punakha Valley – a must-do activity in Bhutan. Other activities to enjoy in the Punakha Valley or Bhutan include hiking, rafting, and exploring the historic sites.

Day 8: Travel to Bumthang – Discover a Trongsa Sightseeing Tour

After a heavenly breakfast at the hotel, it is time to check-out and uncover the highlights of Trongsa. Here you can explore the Trongsa Dzong which is perched atop a ridge and overlooks the Mangde River. In 1543 the first temple was constructed by the Drukpa Lama. Here, the construction of the first Dzong in 1647 by the great-grandson of Drukpa Lama, Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, marked the beginning of a rich history. The Dzong was enlarged and renovated multiple times during the 18th century by various members of the Wangchuck dynasty before they became rulers of Bhutan in 1907.

While in Trongsa, you will also discover the iconic Ta Dzong, a watchtower built to guard the Dzong. After touring the top places to visit, you will be heading next to Bumthang, commonly known as the religious heartland of the nation.
