City Highlights: Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Gelam
Today you will meet at our Singapore office for a tour of three important areas and cultures within Singapore.
Chinatown, located in the southern half of Singapore, is rich in culture and history. Its streets are lined with beautiful Chinese architecture and historical sites such as Thian Hock Keng Temple and Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum. With a wide variety of Chinese restaurants and shops dotting the streets, Chinatown is perfect for trying out authentic Chinese dishes and picking up souvenirs. Situated in the heart of the neighbourhood, Chinatown Heritage Centre provides an insight into the history and evolution of Singapore’s Chinese community.
Little India is another vibrant ethnic enclave in Singapore, located in the north-east. A vivid splash of colour from the Hindu temples and sarees gracing the shops, give the area a unique atmosphere. It is also home to several temples such as Sri Veeramakaliamman, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, and Sri Mariamman Temple. Residents and visitors alike can truly experience the culture of India with its variety of eateries that offer specialties like dosai, idli, and thosai, as well as traditional Indian jewellery and hand-made garments.
Kampong Gelam, Singapore’s only Muslim enclave, is located near the Singapore River in the heart of Singapore. It is a bustling neighbourhood filled with Arab-style buildings and cultural landmarks such as Sultan Mosque, Masjid Abdul Gaffoor, Malay Heritage Centre, and Kampung Glam Park. Wander down the streets for a glimpse of the area’s past and present, and sample some delectable Malay and Arab cuisine like beef rendang, satay, and nasi goring.
