Itinerary
Day 1: Van Phuc silk, Bat Trang ceramics, Dong Ho folk painting & votive crafts
This morning you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Hanoi and driven to Van Phuc, a small village renowned for crafting fine material for the robes of the Royal Court. For centuries, local families have been weaving and dyeing silk, preserving the ancient secrets that result in their distinctive fabrics. After lunch, you’ll explore the premier ceramics centre of Vietnam – Bat Trang. Situated 15km downriver from Hanoi, the village is renowned for producing fine ceramics. Your guide will take you through the tourist area to the old part of the village by the river, where you can observe the time-honoured manufacturing processes still in use and meet the ceramic artisans. You can also take part in creating a ceramic product as a souvenir.
Continuing your Vietnam travel to Dong Ho, you will find a village once famous for its folk paintings, now devoted to making votive paper. Dong Ho is the largest provider of votive products in the country, and you can wander around and see the families making colourful paper televisions, mobile phones, houses, horses, cars, etc. as well as learning about the spiritual life and ancestor worship customs of Vietnamese people. Once your day is complete, you’ll spend the night in Hanoi.
