Itinerary

Day 1: Hanoi Arrival

Today board your departure flight to arrive in Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi.

Day 2: Hanoi (D, GP)

Today, take some time to unwind and refresh from your journey. In the evening, enjoy a welcoming dinner at a charming restaurant housed in a beautifully restored French colonial building. Later, you’ll attend a performance of traditional Water Puppetry, a distinctive art form from northern Vietnam, offering a fun and insightful glimpse into the country’s rural heritage. You will spend the night in Hanoi.

Day 3: Hanoi to Lan Ha Bay (B, L, D, GP, G)

After breakfast, you will depart for Lan Ha Bay, a quieter and less touristy area within one of the most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites, renowned for its expansive marine limestone “karst” landscape. Upon arrival, you’ll board a traditional wooden junk, designed to resemble the classic Vietnamese court vessels, complete with sails, a broad transom, and a rectangular superstructure.

The boat will first take you to explore the more popular World Heritage area before heading to hidden grottoes and caves. If the weather allows, you can enjoy activities such as swimming, fishing, or hiking up a hill  for panoramic views of the bay’s striking seascape. Alternatively, you can take a sampan ride into some of the caves at sea level. All meals on board will feature fresh seafood, and you will spend the night in a twin cabin, complete with an en suite bathroom.

On your two-day excursion to Ha Long Bay, you’ll board one of the finest boats in the area, a blend of modern amenities and traditional design. The boat accommodates between 20 and 30 guests, so you’ll likely be sharing the experience with fellow travellers. Your cabin, measuring approximately 28 square meters, is comfortably furnished with a cosy bed, air conditioning, pillows, crisp white cotton sheets, and an en suite bathroom with a shower.

Day 4: Lan Ha Bay to Hue (Brunch, G, DP)

In the morning, enjoy a leisurely cruise around Ha Long Bay before sitting down to brunch just before docking around noon. Afterward, you’ll head back to Hanoi and transfer to Noi Bai airport for a late afternoon flight to Hue. Upon arrival, our guide will meet you and take you to your hotel for check-in. You’ll spend the evening and overnight in Hue.

Day 5: Cycle Around Hue (40km) (B, L, D, G)

In the morning, your bicycles will be ready at your hotel for a scenic ride through Hue’s rural villages, heading towards the Thanh Toan Bridge, famous for its traditional Chinese-style roof. Along the way, you’ll stop at a local market where you can observe daily life and explore the range of local products. Afterward, you’ll continue back to the city centre, with a visit en route to the Ngoc Son Princess ‘garden house.’ This charming property features a family altar, and the owner, a knowledgeable expert in Hue’s culture and history, will explain the geomantic principles behind the design of the house and garden.

After lunch, your journey continues past the Imperial Citadel and on to Phu Mong Kim Long village, where you’ll visit several traditional garden houses. You’ll then head to the Thien Mu Pagoda, one of Hue’s most iconic landmarks. From here, you’ll cross the river by boat and follow a country lane to a handicraft village known for producing ‘Huong Tram’ (incense sticks). After exploring the village, you’ll loop back to your hotel.

In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at another of the garden houses, where the owner will prepare and serve a traditional Hue meal, showcasing the distinctive flavours of the region’s classic cuisine. You’ll spend the night in Hue.

The garden houses of Hue are a distinctive aspect of the city’s heritage. These traditional, privately owned homes are nestled within beautifully landscaped formal gardens, with some even linked to the old Royal Imperial Court. Hue’s traditional architecture has always been closely intertwined with nature, and the garden houses embody this connection. Each one is unique, with the house and garden, the residents, and the natural surroundings—plants, clouds, and water—existing in a harmonious blend. The narrow streets and lush greenery give the area a charming, village-like atmosphere, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city.

Day 6: Hue to Hoi An (80km) (B, L, G)

This is a classic cycling route suited for those with moderate fitness – challenging, but not overly strenuous. You’ll begin with a transfer to the coast, approximately 18 km (or a 20-minute drive) beyond the city limits of Hue. The first 40 km takes you off the beaten path, riding along a scenic lane shaded by coconut palms, stretching across a peninsula from Thuan An beach to Vinh Loc. Along the way, take a break to explore the numerous ancestral tombs scattered across the high sand dunes.

Upon reaching the end of the peninsula, you’ll cross the Perfume River via a bridge and continue riding for another 11 km to reach Highway 1. At this point, you’ll have two choices—tackle the busy traffic on Vietnam’s main highway or opt for a transfer to the base of the day’s hill climbs.

After tackling the first two moderate climbs, each around 3 km, you’ll pause for a well-deserved break—relaxing, swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Lang Co beach, and enjoying a seafood lunch. Recharged, you’ll face the Hai Van Pass. You’ll bypass the traffic-heavy tunnel in favour of the 11 km mountain road, which is relatively quiet since the tunnel was constructed. The gradient is manageable, and the panoramic views along the way are truly stunning!

Finally, you’ll be transferred to the ancient town of Hoi An, a historic port city and trading hub where you’ll spend the night.

Hoi An boasts a wide range of excellent restaurants serving diverse cuisines at various price points. It’s also a fantastic destination for shopping, particularly for silk. Here, you can have custom-tailored clothing made in just a day or two, all at affordable prices.

Day 7: Cycling Day (35km) (B, L, G)

Embark on a leisurely ride westward to the World Heritage-listed My Son Sanctuary, mainly along peaceful, flat roads that follow the scenic banks of the Thu Bon River.

After seven kilometers, you’ll cross the river to explore a local fishing village, then continue on to a market before reaching Bara Bridge for a refreshing break. Once rejuvenated, you’ll navigate a few busy roads before returning to more tranquil back roads on your way to My Son.

Upon arrival, your guide will lead you through the fascinating remnants of towers built by the Cham civilisation centuries ago. The purpose and origins of these ancient structures remain a mystery to this day.

In the afternoon, you’ll return to your hotel by vehicle, leaving you the rest of the day to relax or explore at your leisure. Your accommodation will be in Hoi An.

My Son was once the spiritual capital of the powerful Cham Kingdom, which dominated Southeast Asia for nearly a thousand years. The Cham craftsmen constructed intricately designed red-brick towers, adorned with detailed figures and motifs, as well as impressive statues. Although the complex suffered significant damage during the American war, it remains a stunning testament to the craftsmanship of its creators. Set in a serene, forested valley crossed by a clear stream, the site is a peaceful spot, though the sun can be intense, so proper sun protection is recommended.

Day 8: Hoi An to My Lai (47km) (B, L, G)

After a satisfying breakfast, you’ll journey along Highway 1 to Quang Ngai, where My Tra Hotel awaits as your overnight stop. Upon arrival, your bicycles will be ready for your ride. The first leg of the journey is easy-going, following peaceful country lanes that lead to the coast and nearby fishing villages. A short, gentle climb up Thien An Mountain provides breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape, with a visit to an ancient pagoda dating back to 1650. This active place of worship is a warm and welcoming spot, where the monks are always happy to receive visitors – don’t forget to bring a small donation.

The ride continues downhill towards the site of the infamous My Lai massacre, now a memorial to the 550 innocent villagers—mostly women and children—who were brutally killed by American soldiers in March 1968. Many were subjected to atrocities before their deaths. The museum and surrounding gardens commemorate the victims, but the profound silence, broken only by the gentle breeze, serves as a poignant tribute.

After a reflective guided tour, you’ll continue your ride along quiet roads to a nearby beach, where you can unwind and perhaps take a swim. A picnic lunch will follow, after which you have the option to loop back through the fishing villages to Quang Ngai, or if you’re feeling weary, take the more direct route back to your hotel.

Day 9: My Lai to Quy Nhon (73km) (B, L, G)

The day kicks off with an early breakfast as the more intense cycling begins! A drive will take you to the starting point, 99km south of My Lai. The first stretch follows the coastal road, passing through Binh Duong, Tung Giang, and Tuy Phuoc. This scenic route is off the beaten path, far from the main highway, and takes you through small villages where you’ll have plenty of opportunities to dismount and interact with the warm and friendly locals. The road surface can vary, ranging from smooth to rough, so the support vehicle may need to take a detour to avoid challenging sections.

As you continue, you’ll eventually reach Tuy Phuoc, just 9km from Quy Nhon City, your final destination for the day. While you can choose to cycle this last segment, the road is busier here, so you might prefer to take the vehicle instead. Once in Quy Nhon, you’ll check in to your accommodation for a well-deserved rest.

Day 10: Quy Nhon to Nha Trang (67km) (B, L, G)

Today’s route primarily follows peaceful lanes and tracks alongside the Reunification Express railway. The first part of the journey takes you along an isolated, well-paved road, with gently rolling terrain and stunning views of the Highland foothills. As you pedal, you’ll pass by vibrant ethnic minority and Vietnamese communities, with scenes of potbellied pigs and barefoot children dashing across your path. You’ll certainly attract attention from the locals, who will likely offer warm hospitality.

As you venture further along this off-the-beaten-path route, it will eventually merge with the highway. At this point, you’ll transfer to four-wheel transport and head towards Nha Trang. Along the way, you’ll stop at Dai Lanh Beach to cool off with a swim and enjoy some refreshments before continuing to your overnight accommodation in Nha Trang.

Day 11: Nha Trang to Mui Ne (80km) (B, L, G)

As usual, you’ll begin by driving to the outskirts of the city to avoid traffic. Once on your bicycles, the ride heads south toward Cam Ranh, covering a distance of 32 kilometers (approximately two hours), until you reach Highway 1, where you’ll dismount. After a short drive to Ca Na for lunch, you’ll continue by vehicle to Luong Son, where you’ll mount your bikes again.

The final leg of the journey spans 48 kilometers (about one and a half hours), making it the longest stretch of the day. While the terrain is occasionally undulating, the road quality is good, allowing for steady progress. As you approach Mui Ne and your hotel, the route becomes hillier, offering scenic views of the high sand dunes and the ocean.

Day 12-14: Mui Ne Free Days (B)

You’ll have free time to enjoy at your own pace.

Nearby Mui Ne Beach stands out as one of Vietnam’s finest, renowned for its expansive, rolling sand dunes. The beach offers a variety of accommodations, including bamboo villas and bungalows, many set within lush, meticulously maintained gardens. Large trees and palm trees provide natural privacy between the resorts, creating a peaceful, secluded atmosphere. Along the beach road, you’ll find an array of restaurants serving both Vietnamese and international cuisine.

While the 18-kilometer-long beach is perfect for evening strolls or relaxing in the sun, there’s not much else to do besides enjoying the sand and the sea. Alternatively, you may choose to visit the golf course in Phan Thiet for a change of pace.

Day 15: Ho Chi Minh Departure (B, DP)

If you’re starting from scratch, about 45 minutes of exercise (either cycling or jogging) three to five times a week for two or three months prior to your departure is advisable.

The early part of the tour is intentionally designed to help you become accustomed to your bicycle and the terrain. If you are not fully fit or unfamiliar with the demands of cycling, we recommend careful preparation.

The cycling is of moderate intensity, divided into eight one-day sections, with daily distances ranging from around 40km to a maximum of 80km. The route primarily follows paved roads and dirt tracks, with gradients varying from easy to challenging, though most are on the gentler side.

Each cycling day typically starts with a transfer to a drop-off point away from busy highways. Along the way, an expert local cyclist and guide will lead you to points of interest. Frequent breaks, both scheduled and spontaneous, will be included.
