Japan: Tanabata – July 7
Similar to Valentine’s Day in the west, Tanabata is celebrated in Japan every July 7th. Tanabata is a festival of ill-fated star-crossed love, originating from ancient Chinese folklore. Legend has it that two stars, Orihime and Hikoboshi, separated by the milky way, would be reunited once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month. During the festival, people write their wishes on colourful strips of paper and hang them on bamboo trees in the hope of having them granted.
South Korea: Liberation Day – July 15
South Korea celebrates Liberation Day on July 15th each year, celebrating the end of Japanese imperial rule in 1945. From morning until noon, a huge torchlight parade is held in Seoul and broadcasts nationally.
